I'm going to recommend Guild Wars, my reasons listed below:
  • I've never played Lineage (1 or 2) so I don't have an opinion on it.
  • Guild Wars rocks!
  • Whilst both Lineage and Guild Wars are published by NCSoft, if you liked WoW (or any Blizzard game for that matter) then you'll probably get into Guild Wars a bit because it is developed by ArenaNet, a company made up of former employees of Blizzard, whereas Lineage is made by a Korean company so it would more than likely play like most other Korean MMORPG's (not that there's anything wrong with that).
  • Lineage II has monthly fees, Guild Wars does not.
  • You have to play Guild Wars in order to understand Guild Wars 2, which is going to be epic.
  • Guild Wars plays differently to most MMORPG's, wherein you can only meet other players in towns, in all non-town areas (dungeons, world map, etc.) you cannot see other people (unless they are in your party, max party is about 4 I believe) this ends up making Guild Wars play like a single player or, if you have party members, co-operative RPG (like Neverwinter Nights or Diablo for example) as opposed to your regular MMORPG. It also prevents KS'ing.
  • From my experience Guild Wars' community is generally welcoming, nice and helpful, I cannot vouch for Lineage II's community however.
That's all I got, in the end it's down to what you prefer, Guild Wars = American MMORPG, Lineage II = Korean MMORPG. I actually prefer Korean style MMORPG's to American style ones, Guild Wars is the only American MMORPG which has kept my interest so far.

Guild Wars wins easily. Firstly, the PvP is much more balanced, any class has it's uses. Guild Wars also has it's ever famous "Anti-Grind" philosophy (sp?), and lastly, Monthly Fees vs No Monthly Fees. GG

Honestly, I love them both.

Story-wise I prefer Guild Wars (specifically Factions).

I've never really seen the story for Lineage II because I play on 'no-pay' servers. D:
