Well...the mangaka probably wanted to add an ironic element, the earl being so fat and having that idiotic grin and pointy ears and all that...I think it was meant for him not to be scary but funny so that people would start to have contradictory feelings on whether to hate him or not...{I think it's a technique]
Same goes with the noahs like Tyki, Road and Lulubell...you know they are evil and kill and a nemesis to humanity, but in the same time you like their characters , thay make you laugh...common sense doesn't usually apply in manga and anime, it's rather affectivity.

That's what I love about this manga. The villains are just so lovable I don't see how anyone could hate them, unlike most shounens.

xD I love how all the villains have this awesome traits about them that makes them funny.

I completely agree with DocGerbil on how you love these villains but the other shounen stories, you just want the villian to loose already >.<
