Ok. Everyone knows how Katsura-sama went on another hiatus?? Well thats because she went to an Anime Convention as the quest of honor (i think) in Germany. That appearance made it 100% positive she was female. That picture if i'm correct is her from the Convention. (All my friends say so and I believe 'em).

I think you mean "sensei" and not "sempai" since "sempai" is what younger students commonly refer to older students as. Neither of those are actually Japanese though since they're Romanji, but just to make it clearer.

It's pretty much confirmed that Hoshinosensei is a girl by those photos from the convention.

I always wondered this, but I had a feeling recently that the mangaka would be female. xD I thought male at first because of the Viz translations, which I had borrowed from my brother and initially gotten into the series by reading. So I was a little unsure from hearing "she" all the time - but the photos! Finally, some evidence! x3 (She is indeed pretty, too.)

I thought female towards the end because of all the tomboy comments - I guess when she refers to herself, she uses a word that is used for tomboys? Or something? Males aren't tomboys - they are boys. xD So they wouldn't refer to themselves as such. o.O;

I kind of wish Viz hadn't printed "Mr. Hoshino" though.

Now I at least know the gender of one of my two favorite mangakas. xD The other still remains a mystery. ;-;

To the whole Hoshino-Sempai/Sensei I don't call her Sensei because she isn't my teacher, she isn't teaching me (she wouldn't take me as an apprentice because I'm crazy). She is my Sempai because I wish to be a graphic novelist so she would be a more experienced person in the field so I figured that Sempai would be better since she isn't my teacher.

I don't think the translators were being sexists. It's just that during the early publications of D. Gray-Man, Hoshino-sensei's gender remained ambiguous. There weren't any pictures of her in print, and Japanese pronouns are very general, plus her name could either be male or female. Her being female was only presumed due to her style of drawing in the early volumes of DGM -- it was very shoujo-esque. But now, it is confirmed that she is indeed female.

Addressing someone as "sensei" doesn't technically mean that she's literally your teacher. It could also mean someone who is skilled in a certain profession like a doctor. To call someone "sempai" means that she is your upperclassman (in school) or a more experienced colleague/co-worker.
