Just a thought: If someone with the Death Note gave up owner ship of it and lost all of their memories, would they be admitted to Heaven and Hell? Send out some ideas, 'cause I'm clueless.

When Ryuuk was first talking to Light about the DeathNote, he said that 'those who use the DeathNote neither go to Heaven, nor Hell'(I don't have the exact quote right now, that's paraphrased), so I'm going to say no, they wouldn't be admitted to Heaven or Hell. (Keeping in mind that the DN very clearly distinguishes using from owning or possessing.

thats true, once you've used a Death note you still go to MU
and if you own a Death note, and dont use it... you can still go to either heaven or hell.
So for the record, owning and using a death note are entirely different.

Default it's so unfair though

i mean. just as many people have said, along with Ryuk, people would write in it at least once out of pure curiosity. I mean...if they only wrote one name in it, found out it worked, and refused to use it ever again...do you think they would still not go to either?

and here's a strange question that popped in my head. What do you think would happen if the first and only name they wrote in it was their own?

Even if you write in it out of curiosity, you will go to MU. It'd like many consequences in life; you may not know fire can kill you, but if you jump into it the fire doesn't respect what you don't know about it.

If you write your own name in the DN while visualizing your face (the second requirement to use the DN and have it work) you will die. No questions asked:-)

This is weird...I'm puzzled. The impression I got from the end of the manga, between Light's flashedback conversation with Ryuk and the third-to-last and second-to-last rules, was that [the soul according to shingami Ryuk] no humans go to Heaven of Hell in that world. There is no afterlife for humans (that Ryuk knows about.)

The last three rules were:

All humans will, without exception, die.
After they die, the place they go is MU. (Nothingness.)
Once dead, they can never come back to life.

And when you think about it, Ryuk's note rules are the only part of the series not prone to being lost-in-translation, since they were written in English from the start. So if we're following Ryuk's rules, no one goes to heaven even if they've never been within a million miles of any part of a Death Note. Not that I'm particularly ready to treat Ryuk as an authority on the afterlife of humans, even within his own literary world. We stop being his business the minute we cop it.

(Ugh, I went and looked back at that disgusting death scene just to check the flashback...I hate that scene, pathetic...) Right in the middle of that we get young, bright-eyed Yagami-kun gladly hypothesizing the absence of Heaven and Hell, and Ryuk agreeing that 'Death is equal.' You can't trust anything Ryuk says, though. (Note that the scene-cut seems designed to give us the impression that Light particularly hates the idea of being 'the same as everyone' after he dies. He'd probably rather go to hell. >>; )

Default Thanks for the comments!

These are really interesting ideas, and as for your answer to the Heaven and Hell thing; that's probably accurate. Stinks to be Light, Misa, Mikami and... whatever Kira's spokes-person's name was. She annoys me. Anyway... As for the whole "No human goes to Heaven" idea, I doubt that very highly. That might have been a mistranslation. 'Cause if that was the case then they wouldn't bother putting that warning in the Death Note in the first place.

On an unrelated topic, since they go to neither Heaven nor Hell, and they go to the "nothingness" somebody mentioned, could that mean that they possibly become Shiningami themselves?... That'd be interesting... What if, let's say...: When the user of a Death Note dies, they are given the option of either becomeing a Shinigami, and losing themselves to the need to kill and remain neutral, or be dragged into nothingness. If that were the case, then I'd bet a million dollars and my left nut that Light would become one. And if that's the case I'd bet on him being the Shinigami who gives the newest Kira the DN after he dies.

Just a thought. Lemme know what you guys think. Thanks again for all the cool comments!!!

read the manga people.
Ryuk says that ALL DEATH IS EQUAL. The reason he said that stuff about heaven and hell to Raito was because he thought that every human seriously believed in heaven and hell.
i suggest you read the manga a couple of times again

comments!!!
it states VERY clearly in the end that no human goes to heaven or hell, everyone goes to nothingness it wasn't a mistranslation, and Ryuk did Not even put it in the DN he just told it to Light

Okay, okay... I missed that part, sheez, give a Shinigami some benefit of doubt, okay? After all, Byakuya's not faultless, why shoud I be

Your wrong about the whole Hell thing, though... Rukia told- oh, wrong Shinigami; MY BAD!!

Sorry, couldn't resist that. But if there's no Heaven and Hell in the DN world, do all dead humans become Shinigami; or do they become nothing. (My hopes of a Shinigami afterlife for humans is meaningless now, anyway; I wanted to see Penbur or Naomi come back and stick it to Light real good.
