Default How long has the shinigami realm been in existence?

While this is a bit more of a technicality, Shinigami is not (to my knowledge) a native Japanese concept but is rather a reaction to the western concept of the grim reaper. To the best of my knowledge, prior to that the Japanese had no specific concept of a personification of death. They of course had deities, demons, etc. but no specifiic Shinigami. Does this at all impact how old the shinigami world is, since such contact is relatively recent? (Yes I know this is fiction but all fiction is based in some way on the world that we inhabit.)
(In deathnote universe)Have the shinigami always been there? Since the human lifespan is predestined anyway, they aren't actually necessary.

(those who follow the bleach forum will notice that I basically just copied the thread that I started there but it still applies.)

Well I always thought that the Shinigami realm would have existed for as long as any realm would have.
For a period of time, I thought it was the Shinigami that were the cause of human death across the world. But it quickly occurred that their lives are predetermined. Shinigami dont necessarily have a purpose, they are like any other animal on earth. They are in nature the same, they are forced to hunt (even though they just write down a name on a piece of paper every 30 years) in order to live.

So that shows the necessity of the Shinigami. The Shinigami realm however, has access to much more than just the human world.
A Shinigami can look down at the human world from a certain spot in the Shinigami realm. But there are dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of others. would that mean that there are more worlds that the Shinigami can see?

Thats why I believe that the Shinigami realm is the oldest of the worlds, as simple as that.

Same thoughts here. But, here's an interesting thought: If Shinigami, the Gods of Death, can die than what is death really?

Escape determinism to free will (see my advice thread for why you have no free will... sorry for all the ads but I've gotten very little feedback)
Once you truly have accepted that you have free will, will not to die. (You may want to read Illusions by Richard Bach to understand some of the details.... I'll be more than happy to explain its contents to the best of my ability if you ask though)

Well, I suppose living forever isnt as much of my hope really.

I mean, living forever would get annoying after a while. I truly just want to be remembered. I know that sounds so cliche, but I mean it. I've always wanted to have people say "Hey I know that guy, he did...."
I've always wanted people nice things to say, rather than what I deal with every day at school....

There are a few paths to immortality; through deeds, progeny, choice, and escaping reality.
