in the manga, akito is a girl, but in the anime, akito is a guy...
i was wondering, which akito is better for the story?

akito's personality as a guy is really interesting, but akito as a girl brings more drama to the story...

maybe they made akito a guy in the anime partially because they weren't sure what voice he should have?

still, no matter what gender, i love akito! ?he/she? is one of my favorite characters ^_^

Well of course, i don't like the anime at all so...
and Akito is my favorite character! ^^

Truthfully, Fruits Basket just wouldn't be that good of a story without Akito. It'd be great, amazing, I have no doubt it would still be a best seller without her story but really Akito's whole background, her emotions and lines, her play in the whole over all theme of the series is what pushed Furuba above and beyond Perfect even and what makes it nearly god-like. (no pun intended but succesfully used)

I don't even watch anime, but I must say that my favourite character in the series is Akito, and I don't think I would like her nearly so much as a guy, somehow.

Perhaps because her dressing as a guy has some symbolism as well and adds an extra dimension to her personality as well as her relationship with her mother.

The reason Akito was a guy in the anime was simply because the manga wasn`t done yet when they were making it.So they didn`t know Akito was eventually gonna turn out to be a chick when they had finished making the anime.Had they made the anime now however,it probably would have turned out differently.

yes, but they should of known. The author of the story ussually coresponds with the animators and tells them how things are going to turn out.
the fact is, Natsuki Takaya actually greatly disliked the director of the anime and the way it was being executed. In the end she by choice had little to no contact with the anime.
She also was very against a second season being made for all these reasons.

I can understand that.I thought the anime was good,at least they kept with everyone`s personalities and how the events and moments went according to the manga.Not like some animes I`ve seen where they change personalities and twist or completely leaves certain moments out,when it comes to the eppies who where in both anime and manga.But with a serie like FB,it should have been something like 50 episodes.The anime is hardly 25% of the manga,and it`s such a deep,serious,sometimes dark serie.They usually have way more eppies.What I heard was they got in an argument so that`s why they ended it at 26 episodes,making the transformation of Kyo way more dramatic and inluding more characs;Yuki,Hanajima,Uotani,Akito and slightly Kagura.For someone like me,who saw the anime first,I was shocked at how short that event was in the manga.(I know,I did a mistake in watching the anime first,shame on me)

Back to topic tho,perhaps the author of FB didn`t figure out until late on she wanted to make Akito a girl.It sounds weird they didn`t get that into the anime if she had known from the very beginning.Altho if they knew they were gonna make the whole anime that short,they may have figured they didn`t have enough eppies until the big revealness of Akito,so they decided just to have her beeing a man.

I think in the anime, they didn't get very far down in the manga. The manga DID just finish two years ago... but personally, I liked the boy side better... just because, I don't know... he seemed like a "bad" boy. But it made more sense when he clawed Tohru. I kept wondering why he had nails.

well, actually Takaya-san said in an interview that she always planned for Akito to be a girl and it was being hinted from the very beggining. You have to know the whole story as a manga artist if there is any hope of foreshadowing ussually because it gets serilized monthly. Which is very impressive on their part then esspecially with a story as intimate as Furuba.
The anime did leave a lot of things out though (all the red hat scenes for example) and added some uneeded things. I also think they twisted the characters personalities as well...
Plus the animation isn't very good at all.
So I'm with the mangaka 100% for dislikeing the anime and its director.
No one really knows why the anime ended where it did or was so short. Maybe at a certain point the director got a knock upside the head and realized he couldn't go on with twisting everything as he did, and knew they were in too deep (in that horrid anime) to try and fix it so they just made Kyo's trueform the revelation.
But its also been noted that the director realllly wanted to do a second season, god forbid.
Sorry for all those out there who wanted one, but i'm really glad it didn't happen.

I agree the animation wasn`t that good,I always thought dog-Shigure didn`t look like a dog at all,but then again he didn`t really in the manga either...but I did think they stayed with the personalities.Who is it you think didn`t have the same personality as in the manga? Maybe I didn`t pay enough attention perhaps.

well i thought it was just very little unnoticable things and probabaly i'm just picky. I just feel like the anime couldn't capture the true essence of the manga at all. And sense they changed it so much and didn't extend the whole story, didn't reveal any of the real plot or twists, that of course some of the emotions that were showing from the very first volume that conect all the way to the last weren't there properly.
and sense they changed Akito's gender she's differn't.

Plus they had all the characters show up when Kyo changed. Really those characters had other things on their mind and wouldn't of partially or completely chased after him as well (like Yuki) and how the heck Tohru ended up at her mothers grave i don't know. Hanajima slamming into Arisa. Shigure bowing to her wanting 'all this' to end. He wanted all this to happen more than anyone! He had some real tricky motives and in the end he's just the funny guy.
So yeah, they weren't quite the same in my opinion.
