The movie's story is set two years after the events of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series's last episode. Dragged from his homeworld of Amestris to this world, Earth, Edward Elric lives in Munich, Germany, in the year 1923. Stripped of his alchemical powers and some of his limbs, but not the attachments for his automail (from his previous journey through the Gate), he has spent all this time researching rocketry together with Alphons Heiderich, a young man who resembles his own brother.

In the movie, Earth is a parallel world to Amestris, and as a result Edward encounters many people whose faces are familiar to him. After rescuing and talking to Noa, a troubled gypsy woman, Edward is thrown into a series of events that reveal a path back to his homeworld along with a conspiracy that threatens both worlds.

Unaware of Edward's situation, Alphonse Elric ventures deeper into the mysteries of alchemy in search of a way to reunite with his older brother.

The movie is set against the backdrop of the depression and economic collapse of Germany after World War I and the formation of the Nazi Party, notably the events leading up to and including the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923. The antagonists frequently make references to it, though the actual event and its key real-life figures (including Adolf Hitler) and its aftermath are only shown in fleeting shots.

come to think of it in the ending the brothers end up coming back to earth
coz ed must close the portal in earth so that no one will ever use it ever again
and it was nice that alphonse gain his memories when hepassed the gate to earth..,
he hid himself in a suit armor which ed didn't new his brother was with him along the ship
which made ed think that al soul binded himself to the armor that will last for a little time...
and during the situation of ed decomposing the ship into two in amestris...he did not knew that al jump in the ship and ask roy mustang a favor that roy will be the one to close the portal in their world(amestris)...

another spoiler is that there's no love ever after for roy mustang & riza hawkeye...
but i think they are destined to be together coz remember in the episode 51 tv series..
both of them showed some hints that they like each other!!!
sweet right!!!

another shitty spoiler is that obviously ed has feelings for winry and so is winry to ed
but how dare he left winry alone and also alphonse left winry too!!!
but i think in earth ,ed can find her winry there...but i guess the original winry will be te best!!!

Roy Mustang (the "Flame Alchemist"): Mustang had lost his left eye shortly after his battle with Führer King Bradley (the Homunculus Pride), in a standoff with former officer Frank Archer, and now (ironically) wears an eye patch as Pride once did. Haunted by his past sins, Mustang refuses to use his flame alchemy (instead choosing simply to use matches), and resigns from his rank as General of the State. He re-enlists as a soldier, and is assigned to a remote outpost of his choice, a cold and lonely place. First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye had shown hints of an attraction for Mustang. The situation didn't develop any further as Mustang, as a lower ranking enlisted soldier, lacks the cocky confidence he once had. When Mustang returns to aid his former comrades, Hawkeye appears happy to see the man Mustang used to be. When he hears that Edward could be returning to their world, he returns to Central and commands his former subordinates in the battle against Eckhart's armored battalion.


my conclusion...
instead of ed going to earth why not al use his soul binding alchemy to go to attach a part of his soul to an armor and let that armor pass through that gate and be the one to destroy the gate on earth ..and there's no risk at all coz as seen in the early parts in the movie that al return to amestris safely after attaching a part if his soul to an armor and meet ed in earth.

I HAD THE EXACT SAME REACTION. It made we wanna punch someone... (the movie writing staff in perticular) I can't belive it ended like that... For days I went around school shouting "What about Winry?!"

Why did the Movie have to end such as it did? For many reasons. First off, Let's look at the fact that Full Metal Alchemists is in my opinion one of the most emotional and complex Animes that has been written. Mind you though, that is only my opinion as a novice in this area. From the moment Ed and Al chose to use human alchemy, there was really no chance of 'happily ever after." They had to come face to face with themselves in order to truly find the answers they needed. Al gave himself for Ed and in return, Ed gave himself for Al. Truly, there is no greater love than that. There was no probability of both brothers existing as they were because of the laws of Equivalent Exchange. Ed and Al could not return to their world because of the uranium which was allowed into our world by alchemy. Ed knew of this power and what it could do. He believed it was his and Al's responsibility to correct that. Not only that, Al's alchemy only lasted so long and they had to insure that the gate was destroyed or risk the annihilation of both worlds. The ending was sad yet also poetic in the regard that there truly could be no happy ending in the era of WWII . It was a tragic era
which sadly enough, could only be brought to an end by means of the weapon that Ed so desperately needed to retrieve. In reference to Mustang and Hawkeye, as long as he is her superior in the Central command, there can never be anything between them. And when he wasn't her superior, let's face it, he was just to depressed for anything to happen. The end has not yet been written for them. Put your own ending on there. It keeps things interesting.

i think that Al didn't send the armor to close it because first of all the alchemy would most likely dispel and, or the armor cannot use alchemy. it is just a part of Al's soul in the armor. plus that would take some pretty crazy alchemy to close it. like they said at the end of the move it was gonna be difficult but between the two us we can figure it out.
