Lightbulb NARUTO Trivias!!! Read if you like...

This thread was inspired by dark_9tails!!

Some of you guys might already know about these, and some probably don’t. But it’s really interesting, so I thought of sharing!

Uzumaki” means “spiral” or “whirlpool”. The spiral is a recurring symbol in NARUTO. “Naruto” is one of the toppings found in ramen, known as the fishcake. Naruto's favorite food is ramen. Incidentally, “Naruto” is also the name of a city and strait in Japan, famous for its whirlpools and the Dainaruto Bashi (Great Naruto Bridge). The bridge that Tazuna was working on (in the Wave Country arc) and eventually finished is named "The Great Naruto Bridge". In the first character bio-data book, Naruto’s hobby is gardening, and the cactus plant shown on Kakashi’s window sill (named Ukki-san) is a gift from Naruto.

Sasuke” is the name of the historical figure “Sarutobi Sasuke”, a real-life ninja. Obviously, Sasuke and Sandaime were named after him. “Uchiha” is derived from “uchiwa”, a round paper fan sold during summer festivals. The symbol of the Uchiha clan is an uchiwa. In the first character bio data book, Sasuke’s favorite food is tomato, and his hobby is training.

Haruno” means “spring field”, while “sakura” means “cherry blossoms”. The cherry blossoms is a symbol of honor and nobility, often used to describe a samurai. In the first character bio data book, Sakura’s motto is “Live a life of Love” (shown in the poster next to Sakura’s bed in the ending theme, Parade).

The “shika” in Shikamaru means “deer”. Shikamaru’s family is known as deer-herders. His surname, “Nara” comes from Nara National Park where many deer roam about. “Chouji” means “butterfly”, while “Ino” means “boar”, which is why Sakura often refers to Ino as “Ino-buta” (Ino-pig). Her surname “Yamanaka” means “in the mountains”. The formation that they often mention, Formation Ino-Shika-Cho, is from the Hanafuda Card game. Ino-Shika-Cho is one of the combinations that can be played. In the first character-bio data book, Ino’s hobby was star-gazing. But in the second book, her hobby became shopping. Shikamaru's hobby is listed as cloud-gazing, while Chouji's is eating yakiniku (pork bbq), but that's really not a surprise.

Hinata” is actually a pun on her surname “Hyuuga”, since both are ways of saying “in the sun”. “Kiba” means “fang”. “Inuzuka” was the name of a real-life clan in the Chiba prefecture back during the Edo period. They were known as “dog warriors” and they worshipped Inu, the deity representing the zodiac sign “dog”. Inuzuka Shino is the dog-using samurai from the Japanese “Hakkenden” story. “Aka” in “Akamaru” means “red”. In the first character book, Hinata’s hobby is pressing flowers.

Neji” means “screw” or “helix”, probably referring to his most often used jutsu, Kaiten, which literally means "whirl". “Tenten” is a typical way of naming Chinese girls, i.e. repeated syllables. “Ten” means “Heaven”, but Tenten’s name could also mean “sporadic”, which describes her appearances in the manga. Rock Lee is a play on Bruce Lee (quite obvious really). In the first character book, Neji's hobby is meditating. Lee's favorite phrases are "Hardwork can beat the genius" and "Springtime of youth!"

Itachi” means “weasel”. In Japanese superstition and belief, the weasel is a symbol of bad luck and something that would bring misfortune. What the hell were his parents thinking?? Giving him a name like that???

Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru are characters that appear in the Japanese story, Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari (Tales of the Gallant Jiraiya). Jiraiya is the main character and he is good at using Toad magic. He is married to Tsunade who is good at Slug magic. Orochimaru is the villain of the story and he uses Snake magic. The summons of the Sannin (snake, slug, toad) are old variations of the jankenpon (rock, paper, scissors). Slug beats snake, snake beats toad and toad beats slug.

Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari is often used for Kabuki plays. The way Jiraiya gives his self-introduction in NARUTO is how Kabuki plays are acted. Even his appearance resembles the image used for the Kabuki plays of Jiraiya Monogatari. The kanji on Jiraiya’s headband means “oil”. It’s believed that toad oil is actually a good medicinal remedy.

---

I’m really fond of trivia’s, because somehow, once you know the meaning behind their names and stuff, some of their features and characteristics, and other details actually make sense. I might add more trivia’s if people like them.

[Edit: I'll be adding additional trivia's in my succeeding posts, so check 'em all, okay?]

Yup his name means scarecrow. I wasn't sure if people were gonna like this trivia thread so I decided not to include all.

-----------------------

Eh... you missed me...? All right... more character names!

"Hatake" means "farmland" while "Kakashi" means scarecrow. "Umi" means ocean, while "Iruka" means dolphin. So his name, Umino Iruka, literally means "dolphin of the ocean". "Mitarashi" and "Anko" are ingredients used to make dango -- Anko's favorite snack.

Sarutobi's summons (the monkey) is a reference to the Monkey King (or Journey to the West). Enma, Sarutobi's summons, transforms into a staff (yoibou) which is Goku's main weapon. "Saru" means "monkey", which is why Nidaime (summoned back to life by Orochimaru) referred to Sarutobi as "monkey".

P.S. You all probably know that Monkey King became the basis for the creation of Dragon Ball (and the light shonen-ai series, Gensomaden Saiyuki).
