Yeah, it's basically what babyturtles said... Rido is the elder brother to Haruka and Juuri (since it is revealed that they were siblings), making him uncle to Kaname and Yuki.

If the Purebloods are considered to be the highest rank among the vampires, then the Kuran family was the highest and most powerful among the Purebloods. The members of the vampire senate (Ichiou for example) follow Rido because of his ideals (you know, the whole bit about becoming powerful... stuff like that...) while Haruka and Juuri chose to live a more peaceful life. They had a son, which was Kaname, but at an unknown point in time was taken by Rido.. During the confrontation between Rido and Haruka, Haruka said that Rido had already "taken away" their son. Rido used Kaname's body as a vessel for the Kuran ancestor's soul, which he had resurrected. In effect, Rido became Kaname's master, making him unable to truly kill Rido.

(But if you ask me, Rido is weird. He was already chopped to pieces by Haruka, but then he just "pieced" back together in a very grotesque manner...)

Because of what Rido did to their son, Haruka and Juuri had no other choice but to keep Yuki's existence a secret. Though they also raised Kaname as their son, he never became truly theirs. Kaname also developed fond feelings for Yuki and, in a brief flashback, he is shown asking a little Yuki that they "become like their parents", in other words, siblings who marry. In the Kuran family customs, it is normal (though not obligatory) for siblings to marry. Although Yuki was very young at the time (5 years old - dunno if in human years or vampire years), and at that age, a child would often immediately answer "yes".

Ten years ago, Rido came to Haruka and Juuri with the intention of taking Yuki as well. Haruka died protecting his children, while Juuri died while casting a spell that would erase Yuki's memories of her five years as a vampire child, and make her human.

It is due to Rido's actions (changing the Hunter list) that caused Shizuka's insanity. In one chapter, it is revealed that he is the one who had imprisoned her. Due to the loss of her lover, it drove her to kill the Kiryuu hunters and turn Zero into a vampire. As a vampire, Zero fed off of 3 Purebloods, that being Yuki, Kaname and Shizuka. Zero received Shizuka's blood indirectly by feeding off Kaname and Ichiru who both have taken in Shizuka's blood. In chapter 40, Ichiru is shown offerring himself to Zero to restore his powers. It is assumed that Zero is saved from becoming Level E since he was able to, in a way, acquire Shizuka's blood, which is the cure of preventing him from falling to Level E.

As a result of the combined power inside him, something is beginning to awaken inside him, and according to Kaname, it will turn him into the most powerful hunter and that he will be the one to kill Rido. This is the reason why Kaname has tolerated having Zero around Yuki. "The chess piece I've carefully raised these five years..."

Zero was placed in that dungeon by order of the Hunter Society. They now see Zero as a liability and something that they will be unable to control. So he was placed in that dungeon, probably to be executed later on.

...but i've been thinking for quite some while now...Rido is Yuuki & Kaname's uncle...sooo Shiki who is his son is Yuuki & Kaname's cousin, right...?but Kaname never acted or showed that Shiki's his cousin...i guess that's beacause he's a pureblood, their ranks are different...^_^Shiki didnt know about Yuuki's exsistence, like everyone else, but now that Yuuki is back, i wonder if they'll ever get it that they're cousins, a family, that they're not alone in this world...^^

I reckon Kaname knew about Shiki, because he was able to trace a linege back to blah blah blah... (That was what the chairman said anyway...)

wow i have read all the chapters many times and never picked up some of those details
