Default vampire knight... is OVERRATED?

no offense here, but i want to know vampire knight fans thoughts.

recently, i had read on such forums on vampire knight. some are good (which are all about zero yuki or kaname yuki and so on) and there are bad ones too. saying vampire knight is overrated

i read the threads, and i think vampire knight is overrated . reasons (taken from people's discussion):
the drawings were great, but the plot is nooormal
well, when i think of it, its normal afterall its just the drawing's attracting attention. there is other mangas which has good plot
just for sake people rate it 5/5 , you shouldn't also rate it 5/5
haha, this is a common thing people always do.
when you rate something, there are some stuff to judge. example: (my own opinion) it takes me pretty hard time to understand the plot. but the drawings were great and so goes the action. so its 4/5 and its like, cause everyone's reading it and going crazy for it, you should go crazy for it too to keep up to the manga trend.
you may not agree with this, but its actually taking place in daily life
there are alot of other stuff people disagree with vampire knight. those two are what i agree with.

others are the Vampire Knight Anime.
this one, its not by vampire knight haters but also fans also agreed to it too.
The animation of vampire knight was really, really bad.
why? try watching back the episodes (especially episode 7-11) and see the animation. at certain times, the animation was really bad.
i remember during the shizuka hio episodes, sometimes the head looked really weird. yuuki's eyes too.

so now, i'm seeking what people think about vampire knight. please say out what are your true thoughts.

DISAGREE,....

just to make it clear that i disagree
reasons:
1. it's totally not overrated
2. it doesnt have a normal plot. i mean seriously, the common plots are brother and sister love, yes but if you read it, its totally different. have you ever read a manga similar to vk? well,.. i havent... have you ever read something that has lots of interesting twists--- yes the art attracts attention but it's really nice! you gotta be honest-- i myself would never have thought about something like this-- the uniforms, the day class and night class,... the love story, the secrecy, the mysteries being unfold.... really interesting in my opinion and honestly, i would have still read this if the drawing is bad... the story is just so catchy!
3. people dont just rate 5/5 because most people did... i believe that people are true to themselves when it comes to stuff like this.
4. another reason: when there is a poll for how much you would rate vk, you dont really see who voted what unless its a public votation plus,.. if you voted for examole 2 out of 5, you can keep it to yourself,.. you can vote and not post your reason,.. it's your choice if you want to explain why you ranked it 2 or something..... its all up to the person....
so that's my reasons.... but jsut so you know, i really respect your opinion,... ive also met people who dont like vk and think that its normal,.. its just that i fully disagree to it. maybe because ive never read something liek it before and i love the genre "mystery" and vk is indeed mysterious,..
yes there are some that are comon but in vk(i believe) that there will most likely be a twist in every common scene....

so there goes my thoughts.....

How could you say the plot is normal when you get confused by it? Shouldn't it be abnormal? On what basis do people judge it as being overrated? I usually review a series based on a certain set of criteria.

FIRSTLY, I never rate anything based on the artwork alone. Even the prettiest artwork with the lamest plots wouldn't garner my interest past a couple of chapters. I'd go for the story, plot development, plot devices, overall character development, relationships of the characters, flow & build-up of the story from one chapter to the next, dynamics, narrative & artwork. I'd also look at the nature of the series. Different genres evoked different reactions & feelings. I would think that Vampire Knight manga fulfills most of the criteria if not all of it, to keep me interested in following it unless, the plot get ridiculous convoluted and became irrelevant or overly drawn out. As far as I'm concern, this hasn't happen in VK yet. I hope it doesn't or else it'll be a waste of natural resources

Do you ever wonder why it is one of the most popular shoujo mangas? The writer is careful with her plot devices, just enough to keep the fans guessing, especially in regards to the romance aspect of the story. She somehow manages to pull it off and hence the intense shipping wars erupting in quite a few forums. Mine you, I'm not into all those shipping stuff myself. But I will acknowledge, it's the single most effective way of keeping fans interested. To put it simply, the mangaka succeeded in keeping the characters' relationships and plot dynamics interesting. The popularity is such that even one of the main male characters recently came up 2nd in a blog poll for the most popular male characters in anime for the Spring season.

I thought the build-up to the storyline and plot development are evenly pace. There were some filler type arch that I thought the writer could do without but the overall impression still compels me to keep on reading the manga.

Would I say it's overrated? No I don't think it's overrated, at least based on my own given criteria. Neither is it underrated.

I wouldn't discuss in detail about the anime version of VK here...I think that's best left to the anime section of the forum. However I do agree with you on one point i.e. the animation quality could have been better dealt with. I hope the studio reserve budget to improve that aspect for the upcoming season 2.

Not exactly...

I guess I can understand if some people think it's overrated, but there's bound to be people like that for every popular series, no?

But you can't possibly judge a series just based on art. I've seen countless mangas with fabulous art, but the plots suck so I stopped reading. As for plot, I tried to imagine the characters drawn horribly with the same plot...but I still have to say VK's got the best, most intricate plot in all of shojo (that I've read). Maybe it's because I hate the "boy meets girl" kinda thing (which most mangas are). If I judge critically, the beginning of VK is rather normal compared to most shojo series, but recently? No e#$%^& way. The plot has skyrocketed and it's almost as if its taking over shojo elements. Sometimes I feel like I'm reading shonen with great more detailed art. I'm trying to stay unbiased, but I've never been so unsure of who the main character will end up with. Usually, when the girl starts out liking/dating one guy, she'll end up with the other guy. I can tell by chapter one. But we are 42 chapters into VK and I still can't be sure!

VK's my personal favorite and every new manga I read, I can't help but compare it to VK. It's still at the top of my list.

i agree with Silver Fantasy well, overrated or not, it's your own opinion if you think it's overrated or not. i don't think so. I know honestly that i like this manga not because everyone else likes it and not just because of the great drawings, i just simply like it. It's as easy as that. I don't think there needs to be a reason to like something, if you like it, you like it, if you don't like it, then oh well, what else can i say? As to is the manga overrated or not, i don't think so, and if you think otherwise, then i can't do anything about it. Besides, i don't think VK is the only manga that some ppl think it's overrated, i have friends and classmates who think mangas like Bleach, Naruto, who are also at the top of the charts in manga, is overrated and doesn't deserve such popularity. So in the end, it depends on if you yourself like it or not, and not really what others think. i'd like to be a loyal Vampire Knight fan ^^

I dont really think that it is overrated. But everybody had different opinions (:

You say it takes place in reality, but vampires dont belong to reality, you dont really come across a hot, sexy vampire in your daily life.
The plot is unusual, its creepy but good (the kaname one). With the whole incest thing on Kaname and Yuuki.
In other animes or movies, you just get vampires, but in this you get a whole ranking of vampires like capitalism w/e you call it. That i think its a good idea.

Yeh the anime was drawn abit rough, but i am more interested in the storyline.

The truth is, yes. Vampire Knight is widely overrated.
People think it isn't typical, or it has an interesting plot. Yeah, well, not really. Erotic vampire feeding scenes? Check. Love triangle? Check. Childhood friendships that eventually bloom into not-so-secret romances? Check. One or two plot twists where two characters are actually related? Check. "Regular" people that actually turn out to be vampires? Checkkkk.
The list goes on.
And it's because of these things that make people think it's such a great series, because it's trying so hard to keep on the mask of being original.
HOWEVER. Does this make VK a bad series? I think not. The point is, people like typical series., they just don't even realize they do. People also seem to make the assumption that typical=bad. Not exactly. Does it get monotonous? Yes. But what doesn't after a while? The truth is, originality is dead.
That doesn't mean that we can't still enjoy it though. Vampire Knight is a lovely shoujo series; what do you expect? A masterpiece? No. But it's still an OK series.

I disagree. I don't think its over rated but there are going to be people out there who just don't like it for some reason or another. There is always someone out there who doesn't like it just because everyone else does. Personally I will never understand why, If someone doesn't like it, do they take the time to read or watch it, then tell other people how horrible it is. Its like.....Do they even have a life? Also I definately don't want to live in any place that incest is a common occurance, if that is ordinary. Its not where I'm from and I get creeped out at the thought of it. so its not the same ol' same ol' for me.

InuYasha, Naruto, Nabari no Ou, Special A, Itazura na Kiss, to me those are the same ol' same ol'. I still like them and read and watch them religiously. For me, Vampire Knight was a happy find. I found myself getting into the plot. Like, what happened to Yuuki, Whats Zeros story, Why was kaname on that mountain that day? What's gonna happen to Zero, Yuuki, Kaname, Headmaster Cross, Ichijo? (not sure if I spelled his name right)

But there is always gonna be someone who wants to rain on your parade. Everyone has a right to their opinion. And everyone has a right to state their opinion. Only thing I can say to those people.....If you don't like it, don't read it. If you don't like the anime because of the animation, Don't watch it. If you don't like the storyline, don't read it. No one is forcing you to. No one is saying read or die. I'm not by any means saying that you are one of those people. I'm just putting what I say to everyone who is like that.

And its hard to be original these days, If its been thought of, its been done. And I like the Animation. As someone who does AMVs and watches alot and I mean alot of Animes, its one of the nicest animation/art direction I've seen. I was impressed with it. Yeah its not perfect, but nothing is perfect. And if you always expect perfect then expect disappointment as well.

Well those are just my thoughts, take it as you want. You can either take it like an adult and say, well I respect your opinion or you could be offended by it. I am not by any means attacking anyone. Like I said before everyone has a right to their opinion and a right to state that opinion. this is just mine.

I will agree that it s overrated...

This is not to say that I don't like VK because I think it's pretty obvious at this juncture that I do. However, it is definitely overrated. It's a really good manga with lots of plot twists even though it started out pretty ordinary. I think that it's proved that it has a nice plot. It takes what appears to be an ordinary idea with vampires/humans in a high school setting and completely changes it into something new.
The main characters aren't exactly flat meaning that they've all had times when they acted out of character like a normal person would. They've all had their chibi moments and etc. Well.. not Kaname as much but he has had his cute moments~

I think that most manga is overrated, actually so it comes as no surprise that I think this is too ;D I give it a 4/5, not a 5/5 because nothing's perfect.

I also agree that the animation was a bit off...

Nonetheless, I enjoy reading VK ;]
