Default what era is Vampire knights set?

I would like to ask this question since this has been bothering me for quite a lenghty amount of time. what year is vampire knight set? where is the setting? I mean, it may sound stupid, but..i recognized that there are no telecommunications device (the chairman has to send a telegram)..you know. the high-tech stuff. but there is a subterranean railway system..and the models of their cars are..vintage..it seems like it has an old world feel..but there are superstars, CEO of software companies and..athletes.. anyway. forgive my ranting here. I'm just supremely curious of these stuff.

That's the problem with a great number of manga: you're unsure of the precise time and location (or don't have any idea at all). I'd forgotten they sent telegrams, although I do remember the underground railway system. The thing is, I'm pretty sure modern countries have subterranien railways or at least partially so; and you can drive a vintage car in the present if you want (and the vintage cars seen in VK are all driven by extremely wealthy persons who'd likely have a car like that). The telegram is the only thing presenting a problem with the purely modern reading. But the thing is, Cross Academy is conceived just like every other Japanese boarding school that I've seen and it's very modern.

In essence, I'm saying, "I have no idea, but it's interesting to consider." ^_^

i agree that it's the modern era..with that kind of uniform? u can't see that kind of uniform at the 80's.. what i know is that the old style of japanese uniforms is the 'sailor's collar' style..well yah know..like sailor moon style..bla blah blah..(i know, it doesn't make any sense)

I've always had an idea for this.
I feel that they are in present times, and I agree with seeliespright about the vintage cars thing and how the telegrams are the only thing presenting a problem, except....
Look at the school grounds and what little we've seen of the town outside. It looks like there are sort of woods around the school, and the town seems very isolated and old fashioned looking. I just think the reason we don't see cell phones/computers/etc is because this particular area is kind of in the middle of nowhere. There are still places that aren't right in a big city like highly populated area. Do you think you'd get any sort of connection in the desert? Not likely. I think that its possible they just don't have that stuff because its too far away.

Although, maybe Hino-sensei just liked the old fashioned Victorian era type cool vampire look and forgot that people would want an explanation for this sort of stuff. XD

Ah..I partially agree with you on that one..but to makes things easy..let's just say they live in Alternate Universe where Europe, Japan and Victorian England merge into one! And they don't need calendars there too.

hmm, i dont think so its in the 18 or 19 or 20 century.

lets see, i mean it might be around the time we live in. (prove? kaname n some other night class students went to aido's place for their vacation using a modern express train)

but the streets seems like old. to me, its like eg, the people living there are maintaining their culture, thats why building seems old. or maybe because its in the village areas.

another proof is their clothes. hahaha, i dont think in the 19 century had skirts that short. and their uniforms seems unique. like abit of old design BUT its is well combined and unique.

so, my answer is the time we are living in!!

maybe it's not OUR TIME, and in anime world.. they don't need to have one.
