it would be a waste of their time cause they can't really track all of the people who scanlate this manga~

I mean, come on, they can't possible roam the earth just to put us in prison?

the prison wont fit us all anyway...i think...

so in a sense, we are doing them a favor since a lot of manga addicts would really want to have their own copy even though they already read the scans
yup...thats because their release is the best...

Publishers in America are much more sensitive about copyright material (as are all mass-media producers: music, film, etc.) because of the thrust of capitalism and their fear of losing money. So, most scanlation studios drop projects after they have been licensed in America because 1. an official publisher has started translating the series into English, so they don't need to 2. American publishers could come after them and shut down their work.

For manga on the Internet being scanlated, the fans who scan, translate, and edit chapters want to be credited for their work, so it is considered theft when someone takes their work without crediting or without their permission. Technically, however, they do not hold copyright, save the translators who (I'm almost certain) have copyright over their translation.
The only thing I want to add to this is that sometimes American publishers don't really care about the scanlation of series. In fact they actually use the popularity of the scanlations, to decide on whether or not they license the manga in English. So for example if Double Arts gets really popular online, then companies will be more likely to license it in English.

You're certainly correct Pezz. When they're wise enough they'll let things go on the Internet and just license the popular titles.

To the others: All they can do is ask us to remove the now-licensed scanlations from our sites. As you say, there's no way they could track us all. WE WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD! *ahem*

Third there are even some poeple who steal the scans themselves and just change the credits.

In short it's stealing when you take something that's not yours or use something you're not allowed to use then credit yourself is this clear enough?

Wow... sorry, but for me that really sounds as if I could be a possible culprit... it was just a question because I was confused about some of these things... and like someone else already said: In general, scanlating is stealing..

And to calm you down: I can not read a single word in Japanese, Chinese or Korean.
And I am not going to steal any scanlations, translations or raw scans!
I hope this is clear enough, too.

Maybe a less angry answer would have made me understand, too?!
