Default Connection to IRC guide

IRC Newbie Guide!

Ok so you want to get on IRC. Good!! Great place to be. This guide was written for the person that has never used IRC and has no idea how to get on. These are simple, basic instructions for setting a nickname and connecting to a network and channel. Although you can get to IRC with emule, I must recommend a script. For starters lets use the basic mIRC script which is available for free at mIRC: Internet Relay Chat client . Once you get it and get it installed, open it up and go up to file, then options

You will need to make a nickname and an alternate nickname (nick) and insert it the fields provided. Later we’ll learn how to register that nick. You will also need to put something in the full name and email address fields; you can use whatever you want (for instance, for the name put none and email address put none@none.org). Above the button that says Connect to IRC Server you can go in and find different servers to connect to. But this can also be done manually if you know the server name. Ok, now you got your nickname and alternate nickname set hit OK and the window will close. Look for the status button. Click it and this window will open up. Notice in the field of the status window, we manually type the server we want to get on. In this case we’ll use irc.rizon.net so you’ll want to type /server irc.rizon.net (all IRC commands start with / , like /join, or /server, or /msg.

After you type in the server command just hit enter. After it connects you’ll see a bunch of stuff scroll in the status window, you’ll know it’s connected if the little lightning bolt at the top left appears broken. It will also say what network you are connected to on top of the status window. Now in the status window type the syntax to join a channel, which is /join #mangafox (the # symbol means channel, in this case we are using the channel #mangafox) so you’ll want to type /join #mangafox and the channel will open.

OK so now you got yourself on IRC, now we want to register that nickname with nickserv so you can keep it. In any window, status or the channel you’re in (doesn’t matter because you are using a command so it wont go in the channel) type this to register your nickname /msg nickserv REGISTER password email address -- replace password with a password for your nick, and replace email address with an email address.(Rizon does not accept Yahoo or Hotmail email address when registering nicks) The word register must be in all caps. You’ll get a message telling you that your nick has been registered with nickserv and to remember your password. So next time you sign on to that network, it will remember you if you keep the same nick. No one will be able to take that nickname unless they know that password. Every time you sign on to a network you’ve registered with, you’ll get a message saying that your nickname is registered and you need to identify or nickserv will change your nick for you to something generic. You will need to type this command to identify to nickserv /msg nickserv IDENTIFY password, but replace password with your password. But this is a pain to have to do every time you sign on so we need to set up the script to automatically identify to nickserv when you sign.. Go back up to file, then perform , anything you want to happen when you join can be put in here. So you’ll want to type /msg nickserv IDENTIFY password – make sure to have the enable box checked or it wont work. When you connect to the network, in the status window you’ll get a message saying Nickserv password accepted – you are now recognized.

ChatZilla Connection To #MangaFox

First you will need to have Firefox (As ChatZilla is a Firefox plug-in)
The easiest way to get this is to get it from the Mozilla site Here

After installation you will need to restart your Firefox but that's no big deal cause your tabs will come back.

To connect to a server you can either click an irc link such as irc://irc.rizon.net/MangaFox and this will connect you to the room linked. (in this case, the mangafox room)
You will get a ChatZilla widow that will come up, this is where you do your talking.
The window will look like this

Another way to connect to IRC with ChatZilla is to click the " Tools > ChatZilla "
This will bring up that ChatZilla window, but this Will not connect you,
To connect you need to know the server that you want to connect to, (This Case irc.rizon.net). You will need to type " /server irc.rizon.net " in the Chat Box area (Will be explained later on) and push enter.
This will bring up a tab in your ChatZilla client.

like so

When the Yellow "Connecting" in the top corner turns to a Green "Connected" your are now ready to join a room.

Before we join a room we will change or nickname first
This will be what the other people in the room will recognize you as, so don't do it something stupid.
To do this we click the box next to the chat line and click the "Change Nickname"

This will bring up a box where you enter your new name, Click OK and your name will be changed
In this case as you can see I'm using "ChatSize"

Now You are ready to join a room!

To do this you type " /join #MangaFox ".
This will bring up another tab.
You have now joined the #mangafox chat room.
Enjoy.

Now the explanation of whats going on with the ChatZilla window

1 = Nick Area / People who are on the channel
2 = Channel Stats Area. In here are things such as channel topic, user count and channel modes.
3 = Chat Area. This is the area that the main chat happens.
4 = Tabbing are, this is where your room tabs and server tabs come up
5 = This is the chat box, this is where you type and send to the room, this is also where you put the commands in such as joining a server and joining rooms. You can put other commands here but that will come later.

Welp I hope that this has been helpful for the users of ChatZilla
Enjoy Chatting
